This was my first time at the Wind Creek Events Center and I intend to be back as I really liked the venue. Its huge w/ great parking. The Actual events room has a gigantic floor and raised sides you can go to, however the side space is limited so you’d want to get their early I’d imagine. For our part we arrived a song or two into the first act…
DOOBIE - I had never heard one song by this act. I’m going to be honest and say I did not expect much however they made me a fan. He’s not heavy in music but in lyrics and vibe he is, if that makes sense. The subject matter is deep and the way he stalks the stage gives off the ambiance that he’s been through it. He has a great DJ that handles samples and occasionally comes down to do some back up singing / rapping. Included in the set was their cover of the Danzig classic “Mother” which sounded great and fit in w/ the set nicely. The highlight was “Hate Song” a track about an ex that prompted numerous middle finger salutes from the crowd. I’m very anxious to see where they go.
ARCHERS - I booked Archers four years ago at Lovedrafts along w/ Take the Name, I believe it was a Sunday night. Something told me that night they were going to go places. Something in the air, something about their performance. Then having them 3 more times at Lovedrafts and watching the crowd grow significantly each time. Last night they crushed it. Right from the lights going off and hearing Hinder’s “Lips of an Angel” over the loudspeaker, the band took the stage like they owned it. They did. Blasting through an 8-song set that included latest Single “The Dirt” and crowd favorites like “Bitter” and “Say This Sober”. The band is like Sensitive madness as they have such romantic moments but can start a pit the next minute. They also started the crowd surfing for the night as well. Singer Nathanael Pulley told the crowd “This is our moment together and nothing can take that away”. He was right and I doubt anyone will forget it either.
CATCH YOUR BREATH - When you look up the term Buzz band these guys will be there. Ever since their track “Dial Tone” hit octane radio these guys are on the rise. They were opening small clubs (500 or less) when that song came out, in a short time they are now headlining and selling out 1000+ rooms and now playing direct support to Nothing More. The band is blast of energy, yet they also throw in that sensitive vibe and takes the listener, concert goer on a journey. When they got to “Dial Tone” its almost like your in another world experiencing it. The band also included real crowd pleasers like “21 Gun Salute” and set closer “Shame on Me”. Its hard to hear vocals sometimes over the crowd singing along. The band has really caught on and I don’t see them slowing down anytime soon.
NOTHING MORE - After what felt like forever (it was only 30 minutes) the lights went out and the familiar sound of “Carnel” came over the speakers and Nothing More exploded onto the stage into “House of Sand”. The energy and way this band sounds like is truly unmatched right now. There’s a reason they are getting bigger and bigger. Vocalist Johnny Hawkins informed us that he woke up w/ a Frog in his throat so the show would be a big unique as he was asking for more crowd help than usual. The audience obliged as they knew every word. From “Jenny” to the new songs like “Freefall” which featured Archers Vocalist Nathanael Pulley. That moment is what tours are all about in my opinion. Johnny said he saved his ass w/ the high notes on that particular song. There was also a birthday on stage as bassist Daniel Oliver was celebrating another year older. He got a proper happy birthday sing along from the band and crowd. Back to the music the band touched on each album w/ some of the “Stories We Tell Ourselves” tracks coming off as particularly strong. Songs like the beautiful “Fade in / Fade Out” and the heavier “Go To War” hit home. They hit the newest record the hardest of course w/ the aforementioned songs as well as “If it doesn’t Hurt” and “Angel Song” both towards the beginning of the set. Nothing More has a very unique portion of their sets where they do a drum solo but they also put the bass on a stick looking thing and spin it and play it w/ drum sticks and… you just have to see it for yourself. They did appear to cut 2 songs from the set based on other set lists from this tour, which was understandable given his voice, though his voice is still better then most even at its worse. They closed out w/ “This is The Time (Ballast)” and their drum solo that they do at the front of the crowd. After the drums stopped and the band said their thank you’s the lights came up and everyone began shuffling out. But we all know we experienced a special night together.
