Saturday nights alright for metal. Isn’t that what they say? Well, it doesn’t matter what they say because that’s the theme we are going with and in Reading on Saturday night it was a Metal onslaught w/ four of the heaviest bands coming straight at you. The “Into Oblivion” Tour hosted by Lamb of God, promoting their newest album of the same name is a very well run machine as far as tours go. Bands on at exact times, stage props put up perfectly and the stage is used perfectly. The trek is currently on its final run as they only have about a week left which means the bands are on their last legs and probably dragging ass a bit from a run that is high octane and full of energy. You wouldn’t know it from the bands though as they all came out to as most said “Fuck this place up”.

Right as the hour hit 7:00 the band Sanguisugabogg took the stage. Actually to be completely accurate the band had already been standing on stage in the dark for a few minutes waiting for their alloted time to begin. These boys from Columbus Ohio come w/ completely unapologetic metal in the vein of Cannibal Corpse w/ brutal breakdowns and growling vocals along w/ pretty disgusting subject matter. Song’s such as “Face Ripped Off” which is about… well someone getting their face ripped off and “Felony Abuse of a Corpse” which is about, well we’ll let you figure that out are reminders that bands will do anything to be hardcore. The bands live show is intense and goes by pretty quick and w/ only 5 songs they have limited time to catch the audience’s attention. The in-between banter is what you’d expect, very thankful but lethargic in nature. They hit us w/ “Dead as Shit” and ended their set.
Second in the lineup was a band called Fit For An Autopsy, not any brighter of subject matter is it? So much death w/ these death metal type bands. Coming straight out of New Jersey the five piece band hits you directly upon the lights coming up. Boom no lead in straight into “Lower Purpose” a track from their most recent 2024 record “The Nothing That is”. They seemed to be a bit more human that our openers when speaking w/ the audience.

The stage crew working over-time and then came the count down. The familiar logo of Kublai Khan Tx came up and in front of the logo was a 5 minute count down. Texas’s own Kublai Khan stormed on the stage w/ lead vocalist Matt Honeycutt demanding the crowd to “Bang your fucking heads” as the opening track “Darwinism” was unleashed upon the crowd. Known for their stop / start type metal w/ a intense groove and Matt’s crowd work the band has come a long way in a short time. He continued to touch on the people in the pit and making sure they kept it open, at one point saying they were closing it up like it’s their job so “Keep it open”. They relied heavily on their most recent release “Exhibition of Prowess” they ripped through “Supreme Ruler”, “low tech” and “Antpile 2” as well as sprinkling in some older tracks as well. Starting the second half of the set with the newest track “The Mountain of Corsicana” with it’s easy to sing along to chorus and bouncing beats the crowd ate it up. The crowd interaction was top level as the pits were a plenty and he reminded them to keep it up. Closing out the set w/ “Theory of Mind” you felt like you just did a workout as they said their goodbyes. The improvements I’ve seen in these guys in just a year or two are impressive, Matt’s confidence the bands tightness and just the overall show is so much better and frankly it was insane to begin with.

Some say Metal is dead. But you can certainly look to last night and Richmond Virginia’s Lamb of God to the counterpoint of that argument. The place was packed and before they even took the stage they had a tarp set up and when the Bands logo lit up the chant of the band’s name was as loud as they have been all night.

‍ ‍Blasting through a 7-song set featuring tracks from 3 different records as well as the brand-new track “The Wretch”. The band did a great job of keeping the show moving and making you feel like they were only on stage for 10-15 minutes as they were extremely entertaining w/ their brand of death metal.

The tarp dropped and the familiar sounds of “Ruin” off the “As The Palaces Burn” record) could be heard taking over the arena with the band’s signature intensity. Vocalist Randy Blythe was by the drums getting a quick drink and he then preceded to his typical running around the stage as he always does. The band played a great mix of songs off many albums from their catalog. They played at least one track from 8 of their 10 studio efforts. Taking the crowd through a journey of the bands career w/ music the place was absolutely on fire and the floor was pure pandemonium from front to back. Having just released a new album, which also happens to be the tours namesake: “Into Oblivion” the band touched on it by playing the title track as well as “Parasocial Christ” and the second to last song of the evening the slow building “Sepsis”. Of course, they went all the way back to 2003 for the opener as well as “Blood Junkie” and “11th Hour”. The band will be hitting a few summer festivals however there’s nothing like seeing them and feeling their energy inside an arena as Randy is brutal with his vocals and rather passive with his talks with the crowd. Closing out with the ultra popular “Redneck”, the crowd was left wanting more as they usually are at a Lamb of God show.
