DATE: Sunday April 26th
VENUE: Capital City Music Hall (Upstairs)
SUBJECTS: Soulja Boy, Lil Xan, Baby Fam, Mr. Hyde
Soulja Boy brought his “Drip Tour” To Harrisburg at the still new Capital City Music Hall. The hip hop mogul that brought you “Crank That” has never played in the Capital City before, though he did pack in Lovedrafts in Mechanicsburg two years ago.
Last night he brought another superstar with him in Lil Xan. Opening the night were two local hip hoppers in Baby Fam and Mr. Hyde.
Mr. Hyde opened the show up at 7:30, a mere 30 minutes after doors were open as the people filed in consistently and the room was filling in. Mr. Hyde is the creator of the Vampire core type of rap. He brough the energy early and often with his 15 minute set. Managing to get the crowd hyped up very well and lead into what was to come later.
Baby Fam was up next w/ Founding member Jersey. He went mostly solo last night. They have very catchy hip hop chorus’s that get stuck in your head like an 80’s song. Managing to bust through a quick set w/ a spectacular set list in my opinion he brought the level of intensity up even more and had the crowd even more excited for the touring duo to take the stage.
After our two local openers Soulja Boy’s DJ got the crowd bumping w/ some exceptional song choices. The crowd was singing along, jumping and having a general party and this wasn’t even the main attraction. I must say though the “Hype up the crowd” portion of the show is a great experience and does really get you more and more excited for what’s to come.
A Brief down time and then it was time for the first man of the hour. Lil Xan. He seems to be in super good shape after a battle w/ Pills a few years prior. He told us he was now 4 years off Pills. Which of course got a giant applause. He was so happy walking the stage telling the crowd he loves them so much. He still looks like a kid, and it really matches his attitude as he’s not childish but he’s a very young spirit which is likely due to the sobriety. He did a nice bit towards the end of the set where he had a crew member or two walk him off stage and he says “well i guess I’m done for tonight, they are taking me off stage”. After this: a woman on the loudspeaker says something to the effect of “Imagine going to a show and they don’t even play your favorite song, what the fuck is that?”. To which he came back and played his most popular song “Betrayed”. With that he was off stage, he did hang out in the crowd for a bit taking pictures and chatting w/ folks.
In typical Soulja Boy fashion it was another good 30 minutes or so until the lights went out and the man took the stage. Coming on stage w/ a Flashy silver get up that had him impossible to miss and with “Turn My Swag On” his opening track. He was in an extremely good mood which is different from the Mechanicsburg show as he simply came out played his songs and left w/ very little if any interaction with the crowd. Last evening he was very interactive and chipper even. He was touring on the back of his brand-new record “The Drip”. Playing all the songs you’d expect and hope to hear such as “Pretty Boy Swag”, “Soulja Girl” and “Donk”. His swagger on the stage hasn’t changed and his owning of the crowd has also not changed as the crowd was screaming before he even set foot on stage. As it is said all good things come to an end and that holds true for a concert as well and he did it in style closing out w/ “Kiss Me Through The Phone” Followed by an encore of “Crank That” which had the audience absolutely rabid. Just like that he was off again and we wait for next time.
